Canadian pixel artist Admurin is our next Member Spotlight focus and July’s Featured Creator. Admurin has been a GDM member since the start of 2021 and has a great collection of pixel art assets including characters, tile sets and effects.
Developer, Asset Creator, or are you a bit of both? I used to be a developer for 1 or 2 months but now focus on making pixel art game assets. Full Time, Part Time, or Hobby? So far making pixel art assets is a hobby but I would love for it to become a full time or part time job.
How long have you been doing this? So far it has been around a year and a half. I started doing art doing art on January 2021 and ever since then I just keep making assets non-stop. It is just so relaxing.
What made you become a dev/artist?
I never had any intention on becoming a developer or an artist. I just remember one summer day I did not have anything to do and picked up Unity for the first time (without any coding experience). I slowly made a few projects but I never finished them due to art being difficult to find. Mixing and matching can be hard with so many different styles. I ended up buying Aseprite to make my own art.
Favourite software/tools to use? The best tool for pixel art, Aseprite! What’s one tip you would give to someone starting out? When you have an empty canvas in your screen you may think of what to do… what colors to use… what have other artists done… etc. I say ignore all that and just draw. It starts with one pixel, then one line, then a curvy line, let your imagination take you places. Making art is easier when you use your eyes, hands and brain together! How do you promote your work (games or assets)? I do not promote the assets as much but the art instead. When I post art I showcase it in a way that it seems that the assets are being used in a game and occasionally I will get contacted by developers that ask about making art for their projects.
What project are you working on now?
Currently I am working on a game called Hailing from the Abyss which is a combat-based rhythm game with unique enemies and music for each. You can play the demo on Steam. Any feedback is extremely valuable to the development team!
Any completed projects/work you want to promote? I would say go check my FX and enemy animations! I have done Fire, Water, Earth, Lightning and Darkness and over 40 animated enemies. All my assets are game ready!
Favourite game ever & why? Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. I was young when I first played this game and I could not put it down, I was completely immersed in the world, fighting evil creatures and being a cool dude at the same time. This game is such a timeless classic I downloaded a GBA emulator just to play this game on my phone. This game stands out to me because of the monsters, the lore, the magic, the mechanics and most importantly the art.
